We Plant A Tree For Every Purchase
MALAIKA New York was founded on the pillars of sustainability and social good. To do our part in contributing to a more sustainable future, we plant a tree for every garment we sell in collaboration with The Canopy Project, a project that aims to reforest East Africa.
Zero Waste Patterns
We design our garments using a technique that minimizes waste. The apparel industry is one of the biggest waste-producing industries. Much of the excess materials created in the apparel industry end up in landfills. By implementing Zero Waste Patterns, we are able to strategically drape the fabric in a such a way so little to no materials are wasted.
Sustainable Textiles / Upcycle
We implement as many sustainable and upcycled textiles as possible in order to further our goal of sustainability. We create garments using a textile called ECONYL. This is a regenerative and high quality material made from repurposing fishing net and carpet fibers through a regenerative system. We also create our jewelry and garments appliqués, like the one found on our Swatch Jacket, from upcycled plastic shopping bags through a custom developed upcycling process.
We source our textiles in North America to maintain our goal of sustainability. Locally sourced textiles helps us support the American garment industry but also lowers our carbon footprint. This gives us the best possible sense of where our textiles come to ensure the highest level of quality in our garments.
MALAIKA New York proudly manufactures all products locally, by hand, in New York. Our ability to hand produce and manufacture all products gives us total control over the quality that goes into each garment produced.
Our designs are free from the qualifications of traditionally seasoned garments. This is also known as a capsule wardrobe we ensure that each piece can be worn all year around, throughout the seasons and will always remain in style eternally. Wearing seasonless pieces also helps ensure that a wardrobe is comprised of less wasteful pieces.
The entirety of our collection is genderless and androgynous. Producing a collection free from constraints of gendered pieces helps further a more sustainable wardrobe so less waste is created on pieces specifically made for a gender. Our designs are inclusive to all.
Importance of Sustainable Fashion
Working towards a more sustainable lifestyle, which includes making educated choices about clothing is important for the future livelihood of our planet. Fast Fashion is a growing issue that effects our planet daily. The apparel industry is the second most polluting industry due to excess material that ends up in landfills as well as chemical waste from inefficient supply chains and manufacturers. By outsourcing to overseas manufacturers, it becomes more difficult to regulate quality, waste as well as worker’s rights. Engaging in sustainable fashion choices helps resolve these issues.
