A Zero Waste Collection Made From Squares & Rectangles

Posted by Malaika Haaning on

Our new zero-waste collection is made out of manipulated squares and triangles.  I start with the fabric and shapes and then the garment. I design collections based on waste not around the garment itself. My first focus is the fabric as that is where my waste will be. I know which fabric I will be using to create the garment and the width of it. The next step is creating a Zero Waste pattern that uses all or most of the fabric. I mostly work with squares as they are easier to estimate for the waste but this time around I also tried using triangles because when they are put together they transform into squares too. The materials that I use for this collection include Tencel, organic cotton & up-cycled bike tubes. For the first time ever I am going to let you decide which styles we are producing so let me know which styles you love below.

The leggings that I am wearing are made from organic cotton, faux leather with up-cycled bike tube embellishments. You can find them here: https://malaikanewyork.com/collections/pants/products/tube-black-leggings

Stay safe.
